About REM Sleep Cycles
Sleep occurs in cycles lasting approximately 90 minutes. Each cycle consists of three main stages:
- Light Sleep (Stage 1 & 2): Transitional sleep, easy to wake, body begins to relax.
- Deep Sleep (Stage 3): Body repairs tissues, strengthens the immune system, and consolidates memory.
- REM Sleep (Rapid Eye Movement): Brain activity increases, dreams occur, and emotional processing takes place. REM sleep is critical for memory, learning, and mood regulation.
Adults typically need 4โ6 complete sleep cycles per night (6โ9 hours) to feel fully rested. Disrupting cycles or waking during deep sleep can cause grogginess, decreased focus, and reduced physical recovery.
